Apple on Monday began rolling out iOS 18.6, a major update for iPhone users that delivers critical security patches, new customization features, and blocks the ability to revert to the previous version, iOS 18.5.
The update, available for all compatible devices, includes at least 24 security fixes, including a patch for a WebKit zero-day vulnerability that Apple says “may have been actively exploited.” According to Apple’s security notes, the flaw could allow maliciously crafted web content to execute arbitrary code, posing a significant risk to users who delay updating.
Citing Apple’s release information, 9to5Mac reported that the company has stopped signing iOS 18.5, effectively preventing users from downgrading once iOS 18.6 is installed. This move aligns with Apple’s long-standing practice of ensuring customers remain on the most secure and stable version of iOS.
According to CNET, iOS 18.6 also introduces a range of settings changes that can make the iPhone feel “like day one again.” These include reconfigurable Lock Screen buttons, new options for the Action Button on supported models, and enhanced notification prioritization powered by Apple Intelligence. Privacy controls and battery optimization tools have also been refined, giving users more control over app tracking and background activity.
ZDNet noted that additional customization improvements, such as redesigned Siri voice options and faster Spotlight search, are aimed at improving day-to-day usability. The publication advises new adopters to adjust key settings immediately to maximize performance, battery life, and privacy protections.
Apple has not disclosed the total number of devices already updated to iOS 18.6, but adoption rates for major releases typically climb quickly due to the company’s push for timely updates. Security experts say this update is particularly important given the confirmed active exploitation of at least one vulnerability.
The iOS 18.6 release follows a series of incremental updates earlier this year that brought new AI-powered features, redesigned widgets, and enhancements to Messages and FaceTime. With this latest update, Apple continues its focus on security hardening while adding usability features intended to extend the lifespan and performance of older iPhones.
iOS 18.6 is available for iPhone Xs and later. Users can update by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple recommends installing the update as soon as possible to ensure device security and stability.
