Nintendo announced a Star Fox 64 remake for Nintendo Switch 2 on Wednesday in an unscheduled Nintendo Direct, with a release date of June 25, 2026, and a digital price of $49.99 — $10 cheaper than most first-party Switch 2 titles.
The game, simply titled Star Fox, is the franchise’s first new entry in over a decade. Nintendo describes it as a “cinematic take” on Star Fox 64, featuring a full visual overhaul, newly redesigned characters, voiced dialogue, and an orchestral soundtrack.
The game includes three distinct modes: Campaign, Challenge, and an all-new 4-vs-4 Battle Mode where up to eight players split between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf across three competitive stages.
Campaign Mode preserves Star Fox 64’s branching route system — actions taken in each stage alter which planets players visit, giving each run a different path through the Lylat System. Challenge Mode unlocks after clearing stages and adds objectives not found in the main campaign.
Price and File Size
The digital version costs $49.99, while the physical edition carries a $60 price tag. Players going digital need at least 14.8GB of free storage space. Pre-orders are live now on Nintendo’s eShop.
Nintendo dropped the announcement without prior warning through the Nintendo Today! app, with the full 15-minute Star Fox Direct broadcast following roughly ten minutes later.
New Switch 2 Features
The game supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in solo Campaign and Challenge modes, letting players switch between button and pointer aiming on the fly.
A GameChat integration lets players appear as Fox McCloud or his crew members during voice chat, with AR filters that mirror facial expressions in real time. GameShare support allows up to four players to join locally or online, with local GameShare compatible with both Switch 2 and original Switch systems.
Why Nintendo Revived Star Fox Now
Nintendo pointed to Fox McCloud’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as context for the revival, positioning the game as a companion to the character’s recent mainstream exposure.
The new character designs take visual cues from the original puppet-style Star Fox SNES box art, making the crew look more animalistic than their N64 counterparts. The redesigns have drawn mixed reactions from fans online.
Nintendo has not commented on whether this remake serves as a platform for future original Star Fox titles.
