Apple has officially introduced the second-generation AirTag, bringing meaningful upgrades to its popular item-tracking device. The new AirTag offers a longer tracking range, louder speaker, and expanded device support, while keeping the same pricing as the original model, according to Apple’s official announcement.
Powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the AirTag 2 improves Precision Finding range by up to 50%, allowing users to locate misplaced items more accurately from farther distances. Apple has also enhanced Bluetooth performance, improving reliability in indoor and crowded environments.
For the first time, Precision Finding now works directly on Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, enabling users to locate items without needing their iPhone. Apple says this update is designed to make everyday tracking faster and more convenient.
The AirTag 2 also features a significantly louder built-in speaker, making it easier to hear alerts when items are hidden inside bags, under furniture, or in noisy surroundings.
Like the original model, AirTag 2 uses Apple’s Find My network, allowing users to track items even when they are far from their own devices. The Share Item Location feature lets users temporarily share an item’s location with trusted third parties, including airlines, helping improve lost-luggage recovery.
Apple continues to emphasize privacy and security, stating that location data is protected using end-to-end encryption, and that AirTag includes safeguards designed to prevent unwanted tracking. The device is intended for tracking personal items, not people.
The AirTag 2 retains the same compact design, uses a replaceable CR2032 battery, and remains compatible with existing AirTag accessories. Pricing remains unchanged at $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack, and the device is available now through Apple’s online and retail stores.
